Part 6 -- Dresden Star Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Time to share the last steps -- adding borders and some quilting ideas!

I added three borders to my finished top -- first border is the background fabric and cut 2" wide to finish at 1 1/2".    Second border used up all my leftovers from the layer cake (plus a couple add-ins because it was pretty tight) -- it's cut 3" wide to finish at 2 1/2".  The third border is the background fabric and cut 4" wide to finish at 3 1/2" wide.

The layer cake leftovers could be pieced together with straight seams but for the fun ...

Part 5 -- Dresden Star Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

My blocks are finished!!
Time to set them into the quilt top!
For the lap robe size, I'm setting the rows horizontal -- for the crib size in the pattern, I set the rows vertical.    Here, I cropped the photo of my current quilt and rotated it 90 degrees to illustrate that option.
NOTE:  There are some other setting options that might appeal to you for hexagon shaped star blocks from a sew-along I did here on the blog in 2014 -- you can review them HERE.

Anytime I'm making a "scrappy" quilt, I begin the setting process by putting ...

Part 4 -- Dresden Star Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

How is piecing the Dresden Star blocks going for you?
It's very quiet out there so I'm assuming I'm doing such a great job on the tutorials that there is no need for questions or you are all just watching me do this??
Whichever it is, I'm having a good time and making steady progress.  I have 13 finished star blocks and 4 half-blocks in preparation for today's post.

Today, I'll cover making the half-blocks and cutting the setting triangles in preparation for
Part 5 to discuss the setting of this quilt.

As you ...

Part 3 -- Dresden Stars Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Are you ready to give this block a try?  Today's tutorial is long but full of pictures which I hope will make it easy to follow.  Read all the way through it first, then sew through it slowly.  If you don't "get it", just do it and it will make sense as you finish the first block.  If you didn't pull out a UFO for "leaders/enders" (I know you have at least one), do that before you start to sew.  Not only will it make the rhythm of the process smoother, it will be a win-win ...

Part 2 -- Dresden Stars Tutorials from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Are you ready?
Today, I'll review the templates and cutting.
For one block, you need six pairs of blades, six kites, six background diamonds and a 1" finished hexagon to applique to the center (I'll cover preparing the hexagon in Part 3).
Let's start with a look at the templates to use.

The last page of the pattern has the three pattern pieces drafted without seam allowances and was done in a response for requests from students wanting to hand piece the block or English paper piece.  These can be used to make rotary cutting templates if ...

Dresden Stars -- a Tutorial Series from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

In 2015, another shop owner showed me a vintage quilt with a unique six-pointed star block I had never seen.  I took pictures and set out to discover the name and source of the block.  But alas, I could not find anything.  I was mid-stream in my obsession with six-pointed stars and "needed" to piece that block so I figured it out from scratch.  It was so much easier to piece than I expect that I wrote my pattern, Dresden Stars to share what I figured out with others.

Fast forward to the pandemic (why does that sound so wrong ...

A Layer Cake Idea! from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Are you a layer cake sucker?
I'm trying to use up a few (so I can buy more guilt-free?).
I'm pretty good at talking myself out of them but this was one I couldn't resist -- I wanted it so badly, I had a friend buy it for me at QuiltCon in 2019.
Forty exciting African prints!!
I think they came from Crimson & Tate in Indianapolis, Indiana?
Problem was that I could not cut them up!?! I auditioned several ideas, but never started anything.  What is the point of buying fabric you don't have the courage to ...

Something Fun!!! from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Something fun has been happening in my space!?!
A couple weeks ago while tidying a shelf of fabric in my stash, a forgotten layer cake surfaced -- it had fallen behind the stack of fabric.  I recall ordering it on-line quite some time ago -- the flyer says 2015?  So it is properly aged at this point.
It only took me about a minute to realize it would be perfect for a new make -- Exploding Heart!  I'm pretty sure I've save every picture of this quilt I've ever seen on Instagram so in January, I bought the pattern!
I ...

Nihal from Sew Preeti Quilts

The Hindi/Urdu word Nihal means happy and satisfied in every way.  Imagine a traveler coming from hot and dusty desert, with a parched throat.  They would become "Nihal" after they had a drink of cool and refreshing water. Happy and satisfied in every way!

Meet Nihal.

Location Courtesy - Kids Play Structure in Mari's Backyard

To make Nihal, I used a pack of 10" squares - Cheers, designed by Carl and Linda Sullivan of Colourwerx. Cheers is from the Island Batik Spring 2022 Collection.  I also used Island Batik Solid light grey fabric for accent and binding.

Celebrate Worldwide Quilting Day with Layer Cake Lotto from Fat Quarter Shop's Jolly Jabber

A nice shot of Kimberly's Layer Cake Quilt

Have you ever wanted to go off-script with your quilting? Like break out of the mold and do something a little bit… unexpected? To celebrate Worldwide Quilting Day on March 19, we’re encouraging you to cut loose in your sewing room and bake up something new. It’s all about cake… Layer Cake, that is.

A stack of Layer Cakes that are fanned out to show the different patterns

I don’t know about you, but is there anything better than a 10″ stack of fabric? Layer Cakes go by several names depending on the manufacturer, but they’re basically a 10″ x 10″ square with about 42 different fabrics.

A “big sis ...

Big Spools Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Big Spools Quilt by Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Jenny Doan’s family tree is stitched with needle and thread.

Look back two generations, and you’ll find a pair of great aunts, master seamstresses who traveled from Sweden to work for the acclaimed New York artist, George Inness.

They stitched and saved to pay passage to America for the entire family–including Jenny’s grandmother, who was just seven years old at the time.

Jenny says, “When I see these spools, I am reminded that sewing is part of my genetic makeup; it changed our family forever!”

Triple Play! Drunkard’s Path from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Drunkard's Path Triple Play by Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Burano is a tiny Italian island known for handmade lace and sherbet-hued homes.

Why were those little houses painted aqua, lavender, and cotton-candy pink? According to legend…it was to help tipsy fishermen find their way home!

This week, the Doan girls are stitching up 3 new Drunkard’s Path quilts, and they’re just as colorful and charming as the streets of Burano!

Watch the latest Triple Play tutorial to learn how to transform layer cakes and charm packs into Drunkard’s Path quilts that are quick, easy, and “sew” much fun!

The Flag of India, First '22 Finish, & New Addition from caledonia quilter

This was such a fun piece to quilt!  It's based on the flag of India and was the last "custom" quilt of 2021.

Much of the quilt is hexagons.

Some applique.  Well, actually all of the hexies, the mountains, and the wheel are appliqued on to the background of sea & sky.

Lots of c/c quilting (Continuous Curve) and s.i.d. around all of the elements.

The strippy blues for the water are very effective.

I always love the back of quilts.

FIRST FINISH OF 2022

This one's mine.  Started on New Year's Day and complete ...

Baskets & Butterflies Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Baskets & Butterflies quilt tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Every year when the weather turns cold, the peacock butterfly finds a cozy bed inside a hollow tree. There she naps for months at a time, with her wings wrapped around her body like a quilt.

At the first sign of spring she emerges, wonderfully refreshed and ready to flutter!  (Add a tiny sewing machine and a stack of pretty precuts, and I’d call that the perfect winter!)

The Baskets & Butterflies quilt tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

This week Jenny is stitching up a new butterfly quilt using a border print and layer cake from the beautiful Elysian collection by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics.

She ...
